Practical problems with inverters
Practical problems with inverters
The cable between the inverter and the motor is 80 meters long: should I be concerned?
Absolutely yes. Beyond 25-50 meters, reflected waves generated by PWM pulses create overvoltages at the motor terminals that can perforate the winding insulation. Additionally, high-frequency parasitic currents (bearing currents) erode motor bearings over time. The practical solution is to install a dv/dt filter or an output inductor between the inverter and the motor, and reduce the switching frequency (carrier frequency) in the inverter's menu.
Practical problems with inverters
After installing the inverter, the nearby PLC goes crazy: outputs trigger by themselves, analog signals fluctuate. Why?
Electromagnetic interference (EMI) generated by the inverter propagates through power cables and common grounding. To eliminate them: use shielded motor cables with a 360° grounded braid on both sides, physically separate power cables from signal cables by at least 20 cm, and install an input EMC filter. If the problem persists, ensure that the inverter and PLC do not share the same ground wiring.
Practical problems with inverters
The inverter trips with an OC (overcurrent) alarm only when cold; it works fine when warm. What is the cause?
This is typical behavior when the DC bus electrolytic capacitors are at the end of their life. When cold, their capacitance is reduced, and they cannot handle current peaks during acceleration. When warm, they "wake up" slightly, and the drive can start. If your inverter is more than 7-8 years old, it is likely that the capacitors need to be replaced.
Practical problems with inverters
The motor vibrates and hums loudly at low frequencies (below 10 Hz) but works fine at high frequencies. How do I fix it?
In scalar V/f control, at very low frequencies, the voltage supplied is insufficient to magnetize the motor, and the rotating field becomes unstable. There are two solutions: increase the manual torque boost (minimum voltage parameter at 0 Hz) or, if precision is needed, switch to sensorless vector control and perform autotuning. Vector control calculates the motor's electrical model and compensates automatically.
Preventive maintenance
Preventive maintenance
How often should I clean the inverter?
In standard industrial environments, cleaning the ventilation grilles and checking the fan should be done every 6 months (every 3 months in dusty or chip-laden environments). Fans have an average lifespan of about 50,000 operating hours and should be preventively replaced every 3-5 years, before they block and cause overheating of the power modules.
Preventive maintenance
How long do electrolytic capacitors in an inverter last and how can you tell if they need to be replaced?
Typical lifespan is 5-10 years, but it drastically reduces if the inverter operates in environments above 40°C. Signs of aging include: visible bulging of the capacitor's top cylinder, increased voltage ripple on the DC bus, and unstable performance during acceleration. Many manufacturers recommend preventive replacement at half-life (around 5 years) in critical applications.
Preventive maintenance
The inverter has been stored in a warehouse for over 2 years without power. Can I power it on normally?
No, electrolytic capacitors degrade without power, and turning them on directly could damage them or cause them to explode. The correct procedure is "reforming": power the inverter with a variac (variable autotransformer), starting at 30% of the nominal voltage and gradually increasing over 30-60 minutes to 100%. If you don't have a variac, some manufacturers recommend powering it at full voltage for 1 hour without commanding the motor.
Toshiba drive configuration
Toshiba drive configuration
How do I unlock hidden parameters in Toshiba VFS15 and VFNC3S?
Toshiba hides advanced parameters by default to simplify initial setup. To unlock full access, set parameter F700 (read restriction) to 0. This will give you access to the entire set of PID configuration, I/O logic, and brake sequence.
Toshiba drive configuration
Correct procedure for Toshiba VFS15 autotuning
Set F400 = 2 and execute the run command. The motor will NOT rotate, but the inverter will apply voltage to the terminals to measure the motor's electrical constants. Do not touch the motor or cables during the procedure. At the end, F400 automatically returns to 0. If you use the VFS15 in lifting applications, autotuning is mandatory for the brake sequence function.
Toshiba drive configuration
How do I configure the brake sequence for lifting (hoists) on Toshiba VFS15?
To prevent load drop during mechanical brake release, the VFS15 has a dedicated function. You need to: 1) activate vector control (pt = 3), 2) perform autotuning (F400 = 2), 3) configure parameters F325 (brake release wait time), F326 (current threshold for release), and F345 (release time). Map a relay output to control the brake contactor. Consult specific manual E6581871 for timing diagrams.
Toshiba drive configuration
Meaning of common alarms on Toshiba: EPHI, OC1/OC2/OC3, OP1/OP2/OP3
EPHI = input phase loss (check fuses and terminal tightening for R, S, T). OC1 = overcurrent during acceleration, OC2 = during deceleration, OC3 = at constant speed (check motor cables, insulation, and load inertia). OP1/OP2/OP3 = overvoltage on the DC bus in the same phases (ramp time too short or braking resistor needed). The inverter stores the last 4 alarms in parameter nErr.
INVT drive configuration
INVT drive configuration
How do I factory reset the INVT GD20?
Go to parameter P00.18: set to 1 to restore default values (excluding motor parameters), or 6 to restore everything including motor data. Use value 2 if you only want to clear the alarm history. Caution: resetting also clears any user password. After the operation, P00.18 automatically returns to 0.
INVT drive configuration
How do I configure the GD20's integrated PID to maintain constant pressure?
To control a pump with a 4-20 mA transducer: connect the transducer to AI2 input, set P00.06 = 7 (frequency reference from PID), then configure group P09 with the desired setpoint (e.g., bar), proportional gain Kp, and integral time Ti. The GD20 will automatically adjust the pump speed to maintain the target pressure.
INVT drive configuration
Real differences between INVT GD20 and GD350: when is GD350 needed?
The GD20 is a compact vector drive for standard applications (pumps, fans, simple conveyors). The GD350 is needed when you require: 1) closed-loop control with encoder (requires optional PG card), 2) integrated programmable PLC logic, 3) connection to industrial fieldbuses like Profinet, EtherCAT, or CANopen via expansion cards, 4) integrated STO function for machine safety according to EN ISO 13849-1.

Weintek HMI and Fatek PLC
How does Weintek's EasyAccess 2.0 remote assistance work and what do I need to use it?
EasyAccess 2.0 creates an encrypted end-to-end VPN connection between your PC and the remote panel without needing to open ports on the corporate router. The only requirement is that the HMI has internet access. cMT X series panels already include the license; for basic series, it must be purchased separately as an activation card. The management portal is weincloud.net.
Weintek HMI and Fatek PLC
Can I connect a Weintek panel to a non-Fatek PLC (e.g., Siemens, Omron)?
Yes, EasyBuilder Pro includes native drivers for over 300 protocols. Weintek panels, particularly the cMT series, can communicate simultaneously with PLCs from different brands (Siemens S7-1200/1500, Omron, Mitsubishi, Allen Bradley, Fatek, INVT) and act as an IIoT gateway by aggregating data from multiple sources to corporate servers via MQTT or OPC UA.
